The two panels depicting The Circumcision of Christ and Christ in the Garden of Olives are painted in a naive and popular style. They are a part of a larger painting with Calvary in the centre, with on either side three scenes from Christ’s Passion. In 1952 the panel was sawn into seven panels which were then sold separately. The left panel depicts Christ’s circumcision in the temple in the presence of his mother Mary and several guests. On the right panel we see Christ in the Garden of Olives. He foresees the suffering he will endure and, overcome by a terrible fear, begs God to ‘let this cup pass me by’. Next to Jesus lie the figures of James, John and Peter who are sleeping peacefully instead of keeping vigil and praying with Him.
