This work was formerly registered as The Seven Sorrows of Mary. The Pietà – Italian for compassion – is one of the seven sorrows. The other six are depicted in the landscape behind Mary: Simeon’s prophesy of Jesus’ Passion in the Presentation at the Temple, the Flight into Egypt, the Child Jesus Lost in the Temple, Mary meeting Jesus carrying the cross on the road to Golgotha, The Crucifixion and the Burial of Jesus. The execution of the landscape and of the small, roughly sketched background figures is very different from that of the Pietà in the foreground.
