In line with Paris and Lille the Ghent Academy organized its first Salon in 1792, next to a competition focusing on the theme of a character portrait. Ernest Joseph Bailly obtained first prize with this man’s portrait. The face is contorted in a grimace that exudes nothing but contempt. Character portraits such as this one tie in with a long tradition that goes back to Leonardo da Vinci and Pieter Brueghel. For his depiction of the theme Contempt of Hate Bailly probably drew inspiration from examples by painter-draughtsman Charles le Brun and sculptor Frans Xaver Messerschmidt, two artists who drew up an inventory as it were of every possible expression.
