The painter’s name often causes confusion, but Adriaen van Utrecht was, in fact, a Flemish artist who was active in Antwerp. This monumental painting was not intended to be a realistic depiction of a fish stall, but to show the variety and richness of what the sea could provide in terms of food. Paintings containing fish can also be read as symbolising the element Water. Van Utrecht added other genre elements to his tableau: while the market vendor negotiates with a customer, a young thief surreptitiously cuts the strings of her purse. The allusions to eroticism and sexuality, particularly in regard to the fish display, convey a moral message, one that warns against being blinded by lust. This work once graced the chimneybreast of the kitchen in St Peter’s Abbey in Ghent.
