The painting depicts the mythological story of Theseus, the son of the legendary king of Athens, Aegeus. When Aegus left his pregnant wife Aethra, he hid his sword and sandals under a rock. He told her to send him his son when he was strong enough to move the rock with his own hands. He would recognise his son by his sword and sandals.
