Semele, daughter of Cadmus, is visited by Juno in the guise of her ancient lover Beroë. They sit opposite each other in a hedge-walled garden. Juno holds a grudge against Semele because she is pregnant by Jupiter. Juno advises Semele to ask the god to show himself to her in his full majesty. Only then can she be sure that the father of the child in her womb is a god and not a mere mortal. His heavenly fire devours her human body.
