Anne-Louise Germaine Necker, Baroness of Staël-Holstein, whose call sign was Germaine de Staël also known as Madame de Staël (Paris 1766-1817), was a French-Swiss novelist, essayist and philosopher with what Lord Byron considered an overwhelming personality.
