On the occasion of the 1913 World Fair in Ghent, Frits Van den Berghe, together with Gustave De Smet, Robert Aerens, and others, was commissioned by Jean Delvin to paint decorative panels for the dome of the Grand Palais. In Van den Berghe's work nothing has been preserved of this realisation, except for this double-sided sheet and a few non-located sketch sheets. This shows that the artist, perhaps on account of this commission, was thinking entirely in symbolist terms. Some drawings recall themes by George Minne. The comparison with Gustave De Smet can also be made in this context, for example, with Eve (Brussels, Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium) and The Summer (private collection).
