Ensor intended the print 'The Devil and the Windmill' for the bibliophile edition of a collection of stories by the Antwerp writer Horace Van Offel (1878-1944). The edition was published in 1935 by the Brussels publisher Editions des Artistes in 396 copies. There are 25 numbered copies on Japanese mother-of-pearl paper, printed in sanguine. Ensor based the print on Van Offel's short story about the saintly life of Saint-Charmant, a mite of honour besieged by the devil. The devil succeeded in setting the inhabitants of the nearby village against Saint-Charmant, and the saint was tied to the sails of a windmill. A storm wind blew the mill sails away and Saint-Charmant was taken to heaven.
