Ensor was familiar with masks from childhood, through his parents' souvenir shop. Later, he himself would also collect them. In comparison with his painterly oeuvre, it is striking that the mask theme dominates only two etchings, namely "Scandalized Masks" and "Intrigued Masks" (inv. 1998-B-128). The first print is based on the painting of the same name, which Ensor admittedly dated '1883', but of which the masks are probably a later overpainting (Brussels, Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium). An enlarged version of the print 'Scandalised masks' was included in the 1922 deluxe edition of Grégoire Le Roy's Ensor monograph.
