Constantin Meunier is mainly known for his realistic sculptures. He gained an international reputation for his portrayals of miners and farm labourers. Meunier emphasised their physical strength. For him the exaltation of labour above social conscience was of prime importance. The Reaper portrays both the rhythm of and the exertion involved in the work being done.
