The clear, heavy outlines surrounding the areas of colour make Fair in Deurle look almost childishly naive. The flapping flags and the vivid accents of whitewashed facades set against predominantly warm colours create a merry and carefree atmosphere. After his stay in the Netherlands during the First World War, Gustave De Smet painted in oils not only on canvas but also on paper and cardboard. These are often fully developed studies of a motif which the artist later transferred to canvas, usually in a larger format. This version of Fair in Deurle is in oils on paper, but there is also a larger one on canvas in a private collection.
