The sombre clouds and the treetops on the left, which are disturbed by the gathering wind, predict an approaching thunderstorm. The coachman makes every effort to get his passengers home safe and dry. Given their opulent clothes and hats, it is evident that these are townspeople on an outing to the countryside. For city-dwellers, the countryside – with its unspoilt nature, fresh air and, at least in their eyes, untroubled existence – offered both pleasure and respite.
