Several artists around 1500 continued to paint in the tradition of the Flemish Primitives, including Colijn de Coter who was particularly indebted to the Master of Flémalle and Rogier van der Weyden. His output, which mainly consisted of altarpieces, plays an important role in the transition from tradition to innovation. While the style of his paintings tends to be rather archaic with monumental figures, de Coter combines this with more innovative elements, namely a simpler technique, a more accurate rendering of perspective and a more decorative and formal treatment of the subject of his paintings. This painting, which depicts The Adoration of the Magi, is one of the few works in Flanders by this important Brussels painter
