In this sketch, Théo van Rysselberghe portrayed his friend Armand Heins while he was painting in his garden. Armand Heins was a critic, illustrator and artist, and was also intensively engaged in preserving monuments. Among other things, he made hundreds of lithographs and drawings that brought medieval Ghent, which had largely disappeared, back to life. With a few quick brushstrokes and a fresh colour palette, Van Rysselberghe has succeeded in conjuring up an image of the concentration with which his friend is working. The goat at the bottom left was painted by Armand Heins himself, which adds a playful and lively element to the general cheerful atmosphere.
