In this ‘toebackje’ (tobacco scene), a wine-filled earthenware jug, a goblet of wine, an earthenware dish with walnuts, a cracked walnut, a long clay pipe with tobacco and a tobacco pouch are seen on the edge of a table. The pouch only became visible during the recent restoration of the painting. Tobacco was known in the Netherlands from the mid-sixteenth century, and was used as a health product and a stimulant. It was imported from Brazil, Virginia, Maryland and the Caribbean. Gerrit Marschael, a tobacco merchant from Dordrecht, commissioned this still life: it might have been a gift for a client, or a painting produced for publicity purposes.
