The Romantic painter Antoine Wiertz nurtured a great admiration for Peter Paul Rubens. He copied his distinctive lively colour palette, the chiaroscuro, his flamboyant brush strokes and his dynamic tone. This sketch has a spontaneous and lively style and reminds the onlooker of a painting exercise, in which a lugubrious scene is suggested using a sketch-like technique, which lends the work considerable expressiveness and liveliness. At the same time a threatening, almost apocalyptic atmosphere is palpable, which seems to herald the symbolist paintings of artists such as Henry Degroux for example.
