In 1853, a committee that included Baron Seutin, chief physician, and the entire officer corps of the health service of the Belgian army decided to offer Inspector General Jean-François Vleminckx a medal of honour in recognition of the dedicated way in which he had organised this service. The presentation of the medal, with Vleminckx's bust engraved by Leopold Wiener, took place on 1 July 1853.
