At the age of 20, Henri-Joseph Lebasque went to Paris, where he was soon influenced by Impressionism. In his work, his immediate surroundings are usually central. In the Diabolo Game, these are associated with a quiet and intimate atmosphere. In the foreground, Lebasque placed a girl who is absorbed in her game. At the back, a woman is sitting with a knitting needle. Typical of Lebasque is the clear, almost fauvistic use of colour and the simple composition, in which a tight line execution goes hand in hand with the suggestion of movement.
