Filippo della Valle made his career as a sculptor in Rome. For Pope Clement XII, he created the sculpture ‘Moderation’ with two putti, in the Corsini chapel in the church of St John Lateran. Clement XII was born in 1652 as Prince Lorenzo Corsini (1652-1740). He was Pope from 1730 until his death. During the last years of his papacy he was totally blind, which is immediately noticeable in the eyes of this portrait. His main achievement was to drastically reorganize the finances of the Vatican. This included the re-establishment of a public lottery. He invested the revenues invest in art and science, including the construction of the Trevi Fountain, for which Della Valle made the two allegorical figures ‘Abundance’ and ‘Health’ that flank the sea god Oceanus.
