Various objects associated with the hunting and capturing of birds are depicted in these hunting still lifes: nets for catching partridges, a game bag for the spoils and a hunting horn, the latter of which was not employed when chasing birds, but larger game. One painting shows a male partridge on a stone table. The focal point of the other is a Frisian grouse. Partridges (‘perdrijsen’) were then associated with ‘ritsigheyt’ (lust). Such paintings were popular with hunters, but also displayed in rooms dedicated to art and cabinets of curiosities.
