Gustave Van de Woestyne painted portraits throughout his career, usually of people close to him – family, friends and farmers. Here we see his wife, Prudence De Schepper, whom he married in 1908. This sensitive portrait was done two years later. We can see a sign of Van de Woestyne’s admiration for the Flemish Primitives and the Italian Quattrocento in his preference for giving forms a clear outline. On the other hand, the dress with its pattern of spots and the flat, barely touched background, show the influence of Symbolism, where precise drawing is often combined with a more decorative approach.
