This medal served as the official prize medal for the Grand Duchy of Hesse. The obverse depicts Ernst-Ludwig, the last Grand Duke of Hesse. The Grand Duke had to abdicate after the Great War in November 1918 when Hesse became a republic within the framework of the German Empire.
