This portrait medal was issued in honour of French politician Jean-Paul, Pierre Casimir Périer. After a long political career, he was appointed president of the French Republic on 25 June 1894. On the reverse, a woman wearing a long robe and veil symbolises the French Republic. She throws a ballot into a chalice standing on a platform decorated along both sides with a lion's head and in the centre the tablets of the law on top of branches and an axe with the letter R on the left and F on the right.
