Major cholera epidemics regularly broke out in Europe in the 19th century. Causes were poor living conditions and poor hygiene. In 1892, Hamburg was hit hard. After the outbreak, Hamburg's city council commissioned the design of a medal of honour as a reward for services rendered. Here, the two men fighting for their lives against monstrous snakes symbolise the fight against evil. The reverse refers to the gratitude of the city of Hamburg.
