This portrait medal depicts Idea Louise Strong Hammond. She was born the daughter of an American minister in rural Ohio in 1859. Her mother had studied at Yale University and insisted that all her children receive a solid education. Idea, along with her brother, went to study in Chicago. After her studies, she became a promising art student, but she abandoned her ambitions after her marriage to Willam Andrew Hammond. She was known as a very artistic, resourceful and determined, charismatic woman.
