Pierre Dautel portrayed his father, the architect Pierre-Joseph Dautel, on this medal. Father Dautel was born in Petite-Forêt on 1841 and died in Valenciennes in 1906. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris with Louis Hippolyte Lebras from 1860 and became architect for the Valenciennes district from 1876, where he designed the Casino of Dunkirk and a church in Saultain, among other buildings.
