In 1908, the "Société Hollandaise-Belge des amis de la Médaille d'Art" organised a competition between young Dutch and Belgian medallists. With such competitions, the society wanted to support young artists. The subject imposed in 1908 was "L' Enseignement". Fourteen artists submitted fifteen designs. Paul Wissant was the laureate. In addition to a sum of money, his design was made available to all members of the association. The front depicts a little girl with braids, sitting and writing at a lectern. A woman is bending over the child to help her.
