The work of Georges Buysse is typical of the Ghent art scene at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, dominated by impressionism and luminism. Buysse is probably not the best known of the luminists, but as co-founder of the group Vie et lumière, he played a not unimportant role in the spread of impressionism and neo-impressionism in Flanders. Although he started to use more colour and paint more clearly from 1890 onwards, a light touch, subtle colour nuances and a subdued poetic imagery remain constant characteristics throughout Buyse's career. The simple but brilliant play of horizontal and vertical lines in the composition also proves that he is not only a remarkable colourist, but also has a sharp eye for reality.
