Alfred Verwee preferred to work in the vicinity of Knokke-Heist and nearly always painted animals in the flat polder landscape. Characteristic of his realistic work as a whole is the way he depicted the animals, mainly cattle, in a special way that was very tangible and true to life. In Two Young Bulls Fighting this approach even assumes a heroic nature. Verwee liked to use pure colours and a clear light and he can also be regarded as a predecessor of Belgian impressionism.
