The Salon catalogue of 1896 (no. 4) describes the painting as follows: The Count of Egmont, a moment before going to his death, wrote a last letter to Philip II in which, reminding him of his services, he recommended his wife and his many children (sic). The scene takes place in a salon of the King's House, on the Grand'Place in Brussels, in front of which the scaffold was erected; two officers of the Spanish guards come to fetch the illustrious victim; d'Egmont has risen and gives the letter to Rythovius, Bishop of Ypres, asking him to forward it to the King; Sabine of Bavaria, his wife, is present at this heart-rending scene
