During Thursday Late, musician and composer Innerwoud will perform an intimate concert in MSK's Forum room. The concert is part of a book presentation earlier that evening.

The violin in a new light

Ruth invites... is a brainchild of Ghent violinist Ruth Mareen (°1998). The project arose from Ruth's urge to make a deep connection with her audience in an intimate setting. She wants to draw the listener into a story. Most of all, she likes to do this with others. The duo line-up allows for incredibly intense collaboration, where every musical detail can be worked out. This attracts Ruth immensely. Since 2016, she has formed duo RAAS together with guitarist Marie-Lou Debels. For this project, Ruth now also forms a duo with pianist Brecht Valckenaers and cellist Nina Vanhoenacker.

An intimate programme

The concert programme consists of a collection of works that get Ruth all hot and bothered. Conveying playing pleasure and enthusiasm is always central. She chose four 20th-century composers, each with their own style. Enescu is known for his folk influences and compositions that sound like written-out improvisations. Brindle uses many special effects and creates contrasting atmospheres. Schnittke and Ravel alternate between rhythmic passages and slow melancholic pieces. The compositions are linked by interludes improvised on the spot. And with a chat afterwards, the young musicians seek a real connection with the listener.

About the musicians

Ruth Mareen (°1998) obtained her bachelor's degree at the Leuven conservatoire with Elisa Kawaguti and went on to complete a master's degree at the conservatoire in The Hague. She was a member of the Ensemble Academy for two years, has a great interest in improvisation and combined her classical studies with individual lessons from bassist Jos Machtel and ensemble from Dré Pallemaerts in the jazz department.

Brecht Valckenaers took piano and composition lessons at the Young Conservatory in Antwerp and the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp. He won first prizes at several competitions, including the Steinway Piano Competition, the Cantabile Piano Competition and Le Concours de Piano Andrée Charlier and was one of Klara's De Twintigers in 2023.
