The medieval stone Walpoort arch bridge is depicted in the center of the painting, offering a view through to the water behind. A few ships can be seen in front. The painter sought picturesque effects with this cityscape, working with contrasts between light and shadow, crumbling walls reflected in the water and trees with spiky foliage. De Noter enjoyed considerable acclaim with this painting in the Salon of 1835.
