Tenant Farm in the Snow is considered a key work in Valerius De Saedeleer’s oeuvre. While the winter landscape and the scene of the figures trudging through the snow is somewhat reminiscent of Peter Bruegel the Elder’s painting Hunters in the snow (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna), the mood of De Saedeleer’s is completely different. The main theme of this oppressive scene of two poor souls making their way to their humble abode is one of gloom and even despair. Bruegel’s attention to detail even inspired De Saedeleer to develop his trademark, namely the branch structure of leafless trees, which is painstakingly drawn, like lacework or calligraphy against the ominous winter sky.
