Judas Maccabeus was a Jewish guerrilla leader in the second century before Christ who led the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire. He is celebrated for restoring the Temple in Jerusalem. His military successes, including the recapture of Jerusalem, are commemorated in the festival of Hanukkah.
