The seaport of Bruges was solemnly inaugurated by King Leopold II on 23 July 1907. The seaport is connected to the city by means of a 10 km canal. This gigantic structure was built on the initiative of Bruges' mayor Visart de Bocarmé. The city council wanted to immortalise this event by issuing this commemorative medal with the portrait of Leopold II, in which Devreese depicts on the reverse side the prosperity that the new port will bring to the city.
