Floris de Cuyper designed this version of the Maiden of Ghent, drawing inspiration from the “Old Flanders” section of the 1913 World Exhibition in Ghent. The obverse shows the Maiden of Ghent wearing a medieval pointed hat and holding the coat of arms of the city. Although the medal existed earlier, it has only been awarded as the “Medal of the City of Ghent” since 1931, under the following conditions: Members of the royal family invited / Ambassadors on official visits to Ghent / Heads of state or presidents on official visits to Ghent / Ghent-based associations of high cultural, economic or sporting standing celebrating their centenary (or more) / City council members with 35 years of service. Since 2001, the city has had new medals bearing the new city logo.
