The Société Générale de Belgique, the credit institution for the Southern provinces, was set up in 1822 by King William I. Its aim was to support industry in addition to issuing banknotes. In addition to contributing capital by issuing shares, King William I made a contribution in kind of a number of domains, including the forest of Soignies, depicted on the medal as the first property of the Société Générale. For the commemoration of the bank's centenary, the best engraver of the period, Godfried Devreese, was engaged.
