As captain of the Dutch fleet, Maarten Tromp achieved hero status. With his ship, the ‘Brederode’, he claimed a resounding victory in the battle near Ter Heijde in 1653. He wears a medal on a gold chain across his chest. The awarding of such honours was regarded as an expression of appreciation. Tromp, who was nicknamed ‘Bestevaer’ (old Dutch for grandfather), went down in history as one of Holland’s greatest naval heroes.
