Fresnes-les-Rungis prison was designed by French architect François Henri Poussin. Its construction took three years. In 1900, this beautiful plaque was designed by Oscar Roty on behalf of the builders. It was exhibited in Brussels at the Salon de la Medaille during the World Exhibition in 1910, together with the designs that had been drawn. The obverse depicts a triptych with, on the left, a weeping prisoner, in the centre a prisoner at work and on the right a prisoner receiving a visit from his wife and child. On the back, his "story" continues and he leaves the prison with his wife and child as a new person. Roty succeeds completely in his intention to have the obverse and the reverse fit together. This plaque was so popular at the time that it can be found in almost all specialist publications about this period.
