The front of this plaque shows President Carnot on his deathbed, with a woman wearing a mourning veil next to her. The reverse shows the funeral procession. Marie-François Sadi Carnot was the third generation of a family of French politicians. He was born in Limoges in 1837 and became a civil engineer. He became a member of the National Assembly and supported Gambetta. In 1887, he was elected President of France and, because of his impartiality, held this office with great dignity. He was killed in an anarchist attack in Lyon in 1894. His funeral on 1 July was immortalised by Oscar Roty.
