In his work, Frits van den Berghe showed a lot of interest in the versatility of the human psyche. This so-called 'idiot' – a thickset and shabbily dressed figure with an almost ape-like physiognomy typical of some forms of mental retardation – is a good example of Van den Berghe's approach, which always has a touch of humour to it, though this never dominates the tragic aspect. The frontal view of this solitary figure in his colourful surroundings conveys both the subject's helplessness and his child-like quality.
